At Made Trade, we believe we can make the world a more beautiful place by holding ourselves to a higher ethical standard. We call it being “ethically elevated.” It means we put artistry above efficiency. Fair wages above profits. Sustainability above mass production. Quality craftsmanship above mindless consumption. And transparency above everything, as we painstakingly hand-select only the most beautifully-designed, ethically-made goods that put people and our planet first.
And because there’s nothing uglier than unfairness, hidden practices or trickery, we pledge to provide true transparency about the ethically made goods we offer. So you can shop freely, knowing each piece has been responsibly sourced, and expertly handcrafted with sustainable materials. And that the makers and artisans were paid fair wages.
It’s a lofty vision we hope to achieve. But together we can realize it one beautiful, ethical piece at a time.
We're a woman-owned, family-run company.
Cayley Pater and Andy Ives launched Made Trade in 2018 to fix a problem they kept running into — finding beautiful, ethically made and sustainably sourced products for their home and wardrobes was a huge challenge. They thought shopping ethically made and exceptionally designed products should be incredibly simple — so that's why they created Made Trade.
On Made Trade you can shop responsibly knowing that every product is extensively vetted to ensure it promotes the health of our planet and adheres to one or more of Made Trade's seven core values: Fair Trade, Heritage, Made in USA, People of Color Owned, Sustainable, Vegan, and Women Owned.
Today Made Trade partners with hundreds of brands, small businesses, independent makers, and artisans to bring you carefully curated, sustainably made and ethically sourced products that you can be proud to bring into your life.
Every product on Made Trade adheres to one or more of our seven core values.
Fair Trade — Fair Trade products carried on Made Trade are handmade outside the United States and adhere to international Fair Trade guidelines and labor practices. The makers and artisans employed were paid a living wage and are provided safe and healthy working conditions. Whenever possible, the materials sourced are local to the region where the product was manufactured and eco-friendly practices were used in the manufacturing process. Made Trade works with brands who are fair trade certified, follow fair trade guidelines or even exceed them.

Heritage — Heritage products are handcrafted by makers and artisans around the world using traditional art forms that are in decline or in danger of being lost forever. As mass-production and automation continue to increase, many centuries-old techniques are being replaced by machine-made replicas. As a result, these skills are at risk of being lost. Heritage products are curated from around the world and support artisans who are creating these traditional crafts with techniques that often are passed down through generations. Heritage products help to share, celebrate, and preserve an artisan's cultural heritage by sharing their creation with the global marketplace.

Made in USA — Made in the USA products on Made Trade are locally made in the United States, but we take made in the USA one step further. All made in the USA brands carried on Made Trade construct their products with responsibly sourced materials, pay their workers and makers a fair, living wage and provide employees with safe working conditions. These brands are also prioritizing sustainable growth for their business and are implementing eco-friendly practices throughout their supply chain and manufacturing process. Shopping made in the USA increases the demand for domestically made, ethically produced goods and helps to revive endangered, or even lost industries in the United States.

People of Color Owned — People of Color Owned products come from a business, company or non-profit where 51% or more of the company who makes the product is owned or run by a Black, Indigenous, or Person(s) of Color. Diversity is often hard to come by in the ethical fashion and conscious consumerism space. Made Trade feels it is crucial we allow our customers to search for and easily find products and brands that are POC-Owned. Celebrating diversity and highlighting underrepresented communities in business is core to Made Trade’s mission.

Sustainable — Sustainable products are made with earth-friendly materials, either responsibly sourced, harvested, recycled or upcycled and are intentionally designed to create minimal negative environmental impact. Sustainable brands carried on Made Trade are committed to responsible sourcing and ecological sustainability by harvesting raw materials in the most earth-friendly ways possible. Made Trade-approved sustainable sourcing methods may include: responsibly harvesting raw materials locally, upcycling or recycling used or reclaimed materials like plastic or deadstock fabrics, and using all-natural, earth-friendly materials like plant and mineral-based dyes.

Vegan — Vegan products are 100% free of any and all animal products and byproducts. At Made Trade we only curate vegan products from brands that use natural earth-friendly materials that are responsibly sourced, do not use polyurethane or other synthetic faux leather materials (and use alternatives like plant-based faux leathers, such as Piñatex or mushroom leather), and implement fair business practices with their suppliers and employees.

Women Owned — Women-owned products come from a business, company or non-profit where 51% or more of the company who makes the product is owned or run by an individual(s) identifying as women. We throw everything behind women entrepreneurs and businesses and want to see them all flourish and succeed. A large majority of the products carried on Made Trade are made by women and a majority of the brands we partner with are owned by women. Made Trade is a women-owned business and Made Trade's founder Cayley Pater is very passionate about women succeeding in business.
