For many women living in the lush southern highlands of Tanzania, life centers around subsistence farming, cooking, cleaning and caring for children. Women can weave baskets between their other duties, working daily to earn money to pay school fees, buy food, procure farming supplies and contribute to savings. When a woman has money of her own to use or share, she has greater influence over her life and future.

Milulu grass reeds can be harvested carefully from the marsh without removing the entire plant, dried in the sun, dyed with natural dyes, and split for weaving. The closeness to the earth of both maker and product gives these beautifully crafted baskets widespread appeal.

Swahili African Modern showcases the brilliance of modern African design through an exquisite collection of artisan-crafted home decor. All Swahili African Modern’s baskets and hampers are hand-woven by the Wolof women of Senegal who are traditional, artisan basket weavers. Each basket and hamper is made with natural cattails and reeds, accented by colorful strips of plastic from used prayer mats.

Swahili African Modern’s women artisans weave baskets from the comfort of their villages and are paid well above the living wage. Through the creation of these heritage products, Swahili African Modern helps the Wolof women find a more secure market for their handmade baskets and build greater prosperity in the region. As a result, women have become the primary source of income for their families and communities. Since Swahili African Modern began working in Senegal in 2008 they’ve helped the Wolof women sell thousands of their baskets to stores and individuals around the world. Swahili African Modern is fair trade certified by Fair Trade Federation.
