Made Trade’s online marketplace elegantly blends sustainability and design

Portland, OR: Now more than ever, people are demanding transparency in all aspects of life. From our leaders and public figures, to the food we eat, the clothes we wear, and the items we furnish in our homes with. Making change doesn’t just happen at the polls, it can happen every time we buy something and vote with our dollars. This fall, Made Trade launched their new online marketplace to help people do just that discover beautifully designed, responsibly sourced goods that create positive impact, all on one marketplace.


Made Trade is a curated one-stop-shop for exceptionally designed, ethically made goods, providing a wide selection of clothing, shoes, accessories, home goods, furniture and lighting. With a growing catalog of more than 1000 products handcrafted by makers and artisans here in the United States and around the world, the platform provides a huge curation along with an explanation of what makes each product ethical. From pineapple leather shoes to bamboo fabric underwear, customers can shop with a conscience, knowing that the materials used in Made Trade’s products were sustainably sourced, and that makers and artisans were paid fair wages. Made Trade wants to make it easy for customers to support both people and the planet, just by changing the way they shop.


People can also filter products according to what’s important to them:

  • Sustainable — made with earth-friendly materials, either responsibly harvested, recycled or upcycled
  • Fair Trade — handmade by artisans outside the US, adhering to fair labor practices
  • Heritage — crafted by hand using traditional and often centuries-old techniques

Co-owners Cayley Pater and Andy Ives first met in Fair Trade Club at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2005. They launched Made Trade in the fall of 2018 with a simple mission: to make it easier for people in the US to know the backstory of what they buy, and to also make a positive impact on the world with each purchase. From 2014 to 2018, Cayley ran two fair trade brands and noticed a huge problem finding well designed, ethically made products was no easy task. Cayley and Andy saw an opportunity to create the ultimate online destination, making ethically made goods easily accessible, while also helping social enterprises tell their stories and increase their impact.
